Town in bloom
In 2018, Montataire was awarded the third flower of the "Villes et Villages Fleuris" label. Since then, this distinction has been renewed every three years, rewarding local policy and the work of municipal staff who place ecological issues at the forefront. The staff of the Green Spaces and Sensitive Natural Spaces Department played a key role in achieving this recognition.
The development strategy for the plant and flower heritage
Montataire is committed to sustainable development, favouring environmentally-friendly practices for the flowering and upkeep of its green spaces. Robust, low-water consumption plants are chosen, adapted to new and future climatic conditions. Green spaces are managed gently, taking into account local ecosystems and promoting biodiversity. The city is beautified all year round, with 4,000 spring plants, 2,500 summer plants and 6,000 autumn bulbs in 2021, for example.
A small forest on the banks of the Thérain
Sixty trees and shrubs, including walnut, oak, apple and elder trees, have been planted along Avenue François Mitterrand, with support from the Region. This action is part of the "1 million trees in Hauts-de-France" operation, aimed at combating climate change, promoting biodiversity and improving the urban environment.
Managing green spaces and sensitive natural areas
The commitment of our teams and the support of our elected representatives
A "sustainable development and ecological transition" delegation has been created, with a deputy dedicated to these issues, illustrating the commitment of the teams and elected representatives to the management and preservation of natural areas in the 2020-2026 mandate project.
Differentiated management
Montataire is implementing differentiated management of its green spaces to improve the quality of life and protect the environment. The use of phytosanitary products by municipal services is banned, and replaced by alternative methods such as the rotary brush and the hoe. The city is also encouraging a gradual change in the way weeds are perceived, by encouraging the use of ground cover plants, which will contribute to the total cessation of the use of pesticides. In addition, the systematic use of mulch in flowerbeds will, in the medium term, reduce the use of chemical fertilisers thanks to their decomposition.
One example is the greening of the cemetery. To make it more pleasant, facilitate maintenance and provide freshness in summer, the town has sown seeds selected to remain low in the pathways, with 10% of flowers resistant to dry soil. There will be 4 to 5 mowings a year; during the first few mowings, there may still be a few weeds, which will disappear as the mowings are carried out or as the municipal workers intervene from time to time.
Sensitive natural areas
Montataire is also a protected and preserved natural area.
The living environment and public spaces
Improving the quality of life and urban development
- Burying the networks improves the reliability of energy and information transport, while helping to beautify the urban environment.
- A soft lane and a track A secure cycle path links the hamlet of Magenta to the Forges crossroads, offering pedestrians and cyclists a quiet route.
- Soil decontamination initiated in 2013 at the Carrefour des Forges proved to be a promising success, with the discovery of heavy metals absorbed by plants following the storage of industrial waste. In partnership with the Agglomération Creil Sud Oise and INERIS, the town has set up an innovative experimental zone where clean-up techniques have been tested, marking a first in France and Europe.
- The transition to LED lighting is making progress in Montataire, with a programme to renew the public lighting fleet based on this technology. The municipality's aim is to provide efficient lighting while complying with regulations, in particular to protect nocturnal wildlife.
- The town has more than a dozensports and leisure facilities accessible free of charge to all, regularly maintained by the technical services.
- In 2023, the municipality demonstrated its strong political commitment by planting 250 trees in various parts of the city. The aim of this initiative is to create islands of coolness to combat heatwaves and improve the well-being of residents. The new trees will also contribute to local biodiversity.
