Civil sponsorship<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Originating in the French Revolution, civil sponsorship or republican baptism is a custom whereby the godparents make a symbolic commitment, before civil institutions, to protect a child and ensure that he or she adheres to the values of the Republic. It does not create any legal relationship between the godparent and the child. Thus, the commitment to replace the parents in the event of their death or failure to act has only moral value and has no legal consequences.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
