A founding friendship of the Mycological Society of Montataire

It was during a walk in the forest in 1945 that the idea of an association was born between two friends. Irénée Bas and Raymond Bertault founded the Société Mycologique de Montataire, which celebrates its 80th anniversary this year.

Irénée Bas was a passionate and curious man, with a wide range of interests: mushrooms, of course, but also minerals and diving. Irénée thrived in these fields, which fascinated him, as he meticulously archived, dated and captioned most of the documents and finds he made, turning his office into a veritable den of memories and knowledge. Irénée was also an activist, joining the CGT and serving as a town councillor for 24 years. Until his death, he took part in Franco-German exchanges, having himself escaped forced labour in Germany during the Second World War.

Raymond Bertault was a pharmacist who, after leaving Montataire and the association he founded, went on to become a recognised name in the field of mycology. Raymond had several of his articles published and helped write the book "Flore des champignons supérieurs du Maroc". He was subsequently appointed honorary president of congresses in Copenhagen and Perpignan, as well as of several mycological societies in France. Finally, he was awarded the title of Commandeur des palmes académiques, the highest rank.

A tribute to passionate people

The 80th anniversary of the Société Mycologique de Montataire is an opportunity to remember its founders, who are now deceased. Irénée Bas and Raymond Bertault were two passionate men who lived for the sharing of knowledge and commitment.

Montataire is a milestone in a busy life. "
Raymond Bertault to Irénée Bas during one of their letters.

Today, the association's many members are continuing their work by developing local people's interest in the science of mushrooms.
